Welcome to our ELEVENTH YEAR of classes at the Mountain Metalsmiths School of Jewelry & Lapidary!!

Weekly classes are set up so that everyone has the same opportunity to learn with a maximum enrollment of 6 students. It is not only for the raw beginner, but also for the experienced jeweler. You can choose to take a class on either Tuesdays OR Wednesdays. The classes are held one day or evening a week for 8 weeks at a cost of $20 per hour or $480 for 24 hours of instruction plus a $5 lab fee for consumables. Some additional materials, such as stones or metals, are available for purchase at MMSJL. Our hourly rates are staying the same for 2017! Students will be exposed to various techniques such as sawing, soldering, forging, polishing and stone setting. You can explore surface techniques with a rolling mill, hydraulic press, reticulation, and chasing and repousse'. For those desiring to broaden their abilities, come try wax carving, or experience fusion welding with the Orion Pulse Arc Welder. The Mountain Metalsmiths School will not be offering lapidary classes and lapidary workshops in 2017 due to studio construction. We will announce when the lapidary classes and workshops are available again.

Available Workshops for 2017:
The Mountain Metalsmiths School of Jewelry & Lapidary is now offering 2 and 3 day weekend workshops on the following topics:
  • GENERAL JEWELRY FABRICATION FOR BEGINNING & INTERMEDIATE LEVEL JEWELERS: 3 day weekend workshops
  • WAX CARVING and LOST WAX VACUUM CASTING: 3 day weekend workshops. The first two days we will be carving one or two designs. The third day covers the cleaning up and finishing up the cast pieces.
  • CHASING and REPOUSSE: 4 day weekend workshop- June 1-4
  • PLAYING WITH SHAPES AND TEXTURES: 3 day weekend workshop exploring surface techniques with hammers, punches and stamps, and a hydraulic press
  • SETTING UNUSUAL STONES: 3 day weekend workshop- creating a setting carved in wax OR fabricated in metal
  • AGAIN IN 2017: The Mountain Metalsmiths School of Jewelry & Lapidary is offering THREE two day workshops on the Orion Pulse Arc Welder for those who want to create and repair jewelry without using a torch. The mini-pulse arc welder was designed as a less expensive alternative to the laser and can be used on platinum, gold, silver, brass, and even steel! These low cost workshops are designed for jewelers with more experience.
All of these weekend workshops are geared for either local students who don't have the time to commit to 8 weeks of classes or for students from out of the area. For those of you who do not live in the Asheville NC area, why not take a few days to explore the beauty and culture of Western North Carolina. Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway, sample the local cuisine, visit the many fine galleries of Asheville and the surrounding area.
Sometimes limited funds or lack of time to commit to either a weekend workshop or an eight week class session seems like a tough hurdle to manage. Let the One-on-One option work for you. For a mere $40 per hour plus materials, you can come in and have an instructional session on a particular technique. Perhaps you are running into some problems while creating your own jewelry. Come on down, let us look and see what the issue is, and we'll brainstorm together to solve it.
Are you an educator looking for new ideas for lesson plans? Taking a class or workshop gives you the opportunity to learn new skills to bring back to your students. We can provide a certificate of completion that will state how many hours you spent in a workshop or class. Even a science teacher can enrich a study of geology by learning how to cut cabochons out of rocks. Students would study igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary samples of rock before turning them into beautiful objects fit for jewelry.
